First drive - Acura TSX 2009
By René Gervais
The new TSX also boasts a two mode suspension similar to the famous S2000. It can go from a comfort mode to a firmer ride when the vehicle faces sportier conditions such as a long sharp turn. The low center of gravity enables this sedan to handle track like conditions in a secure fashion. An effort was made to reduce the front end dive during emergency braking which certainly increases stability, along with the addition of hardened body shell. Like most Honda products, it benefits from a shell with advanced compatibility. This means that the body will adapt to the height of the other vehicle thereby reshaping itself to give maximum protection to the cab in case of an accident. If you strike a pedestrian, God forbid, there are designated impact zones to reduce the force of the impact thus reducing the possibility of serious injury.
Different versions
As is often the case at Acura, the TSX ships in three different versions: basic, Premium, or Tech. The prices range from $32,900 for a basic model with a six-speed manual transmission, $40,000 for a five-speed automatic TSX Tech version. The manufacturer expects 70% of sales will come from the Premium while the other two will split the remaining 30%. It hopes, as well, to increase sales from 2000 to 4000 units annually.
Handling impressions
My brief road tryout convinced me of the TSX’s many plusses. Being a stickler for quality of finish, I found the materials beyond reproach. The dashboard is so well constructed making you feel like you’re sitting in a far more expensive vehicle. The dials in three dimensions look ultra modern and read very well. As to comfort, you should have no problem with the rap around seats with superb lateral support.
The TSX feels very stable and the agile suspension should avoid many obstacles. Though the performance is not nirvana-like but for normal driving, it’s more than suffices. The transmission in my tester vehicle managed to get all the available power. I have every reason to look forward to a more rugged tryout. |
