BMW 535i 2008
By Benjamin Cyr
Much more than a simple touch-up
Four years after its unveiling, the present version of the BMW 5 series arrives loaded with modifications for 2008. Though the vehicle may be similar to last year’s, many changes were made to the cab but the most important one, the big enchilada, is the 535i version now delivered with the double-turbo six cylinder engine. Fantastic!
Long list of changes
As I mentioned, the 5 series underwent many changes. The exterior touch-ups seem modest; on closer inspection, you’ll notice new front and rear LED lights plus a new section front and back. These modifications, believe me, don’t jump right at you. In contrast, the work done in the cab is easy to spot and, I might add, very welcome. The central console and the materials used have been have been redone and I think, very successfully. BMW often shouldered criticism concerning its lifeless and austere interiors, criticism that I share. Now, hopefully, a new era begins.
Colour coordination couldn’t be better on our 535i tryout; the marriage of the beige leather and the dashboard and door paneling creates an impression of luxury and richness that permeates the entire cab interior.
In a $70,000 BMW one also expects a high degree of comfort. The 535i, by and large, meets expectations. The front seats, adjustable in a myriad of ways, provide superb comfort. The rear passengers will benefit as well; although this vehicle does not offer the most rear leg room possible, the 5 series offers considerable space. What’s more, the 500 litre trunk allows many stacking possibilities, the running silence will be appreciated and the standard options package is generous; one more reason to avoid the expensive options group.
Things take a bit of a slide when it comes to front passenger space. If you happen to be a larger person, I say: «Good luck». The seat looks to close to the running board, making one feel ill at ease even with the seat completely back. You’ll notice as well the lack of reasonably sized storage space throughout the cab. While we’re on the subject of improvements, let’s mention the iDrive system. Though one understand the diverse menus after a few hours, the system takes up a lot of the driver’s attention. It would be wise not to look away from the road for more than a few seconds....
Nothing but praise for the motorization
Having debuted in the 335i 2007, the superb turbo compressed, 3 litre in-line six cylinder moves the 535i 2008. We’re talking about 300hp and 300lb-ft of torque! Know that this year, the 535i replaces the 530i (255hp) and the 528i version (230hp) takes over from the 525i (215hp). It’s apparently more power for the whole range this year. Note the same 360hp, V8 in the550i. |
