GMC Sierra vs Toyota Tundra 2007

Although the Japanese generally imposed their rule on the American auto industry, they trailed the yanks in the full- size pick-up department till now. Whether it be GM, Ford, or Dodge, pride in these big beasts was well justified.

The Japanese counter-attack

Sierra 1500 and the Tundra 2007

Although the Japanese generally imposed their rule on the American auto industry, they trailed the yanks in the full- size pick-up department till now. Whether it be GM, Ford, or Dodge, pride in these big beasts was well justified. However, competition today has gained new heights, an example being the completely remodelled Tundra. This becomes Toyota’s first full- size pick-up and, believe me, “full” is the operative word.

For the Essai-auto team, we didn’t need anymore to square them off.

Round 1- The cabin and rolling noise

We call them trucks but they handle themselves in a much more civilized fashion than in the past. Though not handled like cars, they are car-like comfortable nonetheless.

Sierra 1500

While on the subject, the new Sierra does not lack comfort. The front seats are an excellent fit with superior back support, making for an excellent driving position. Frankly, it would be difficult to demand more of a truck.

The suspension provides impressive passenger comfort. To this end, GM replaced the front suspension plus torsion bar with a combined coil and shock absorber one. It’s a winning meld of comfort and excellent handling. Also, this GMC gives you four suspensions to choose from, enough to satisfy most taskmasters.

Elsewhere in the cabin, we find the same level of comfort; the bench seat sits at a much more comfortable angle than the one in the F-150.

The lack of noise is noteworthy. One can enjoy the Sierra’s wind free, tranquil interior thanks to good soundproofing. In fact, the only sound to be heard comes from the sensuous Vortec V8 engine. Our model was the 5.3 litre version, equipped with active fuel management, a system which allows the deactivation of four of the eight cylinders at cruising speed. Brilliant, you say, but do we really save with a four cylinder? Not quite. This feature exists in other GM products; however, know that any possible savings go to the lightest foot on the gas pedal.

While the Sierra stands out with its smooth ride, the Tundra is doing all it can to look like a big truck, pure and simple. If that’s truly the goal, it’s been attained. Positive attitude notwithstanding, it does seem much more rugged and reminds us that we’re not behind the wheel of a Camry.

Turning to the cabin, the firm seating typically says “Japanese” without sacrificing comfort and solid support. However, compared to the Sierra, it feels a little austere.

As to the visual aspect, I’d say we’re dealing with different but comparable traits, although Toyota uses slightly better materials than does GM. The simple but well designed cabin includes loads of space behind the seat. If there’s an oversight, it’s the smooth plastic floor rather than a more adhering surface. What’s the point of having a large cargo area if the items slip and slide? It might make the hold a last resort. On the other hand, I must applaud the multitude of small storage areas throughout the cabin and in the doors.

Toyota, this time, loses points on door size. I understand the desire to create a visual effect but having doors that double as training weights seems ridiculous. Therefore gentlemen, be gallant when ushering in a damsel for the first time. Not only will climbing on board detract from her elegance, using both hands to shut the door will sour her opinion of your chariot.

Because of the more welcoming and less extreme cabin than the Tundra’s, I give this round to the Sierra.
