Ford Edge 2007
By Benjamin Cyr
Road-test liked:
-
The modern, stylized silhouette. Sales figures might increase if all Fords looked this good.
-
The gutsy 265 horsepower, 3.5 litre, V6 engine delivers without a hitch; acceleration, in gear or not, the vehicle fully loaded or not, allows the Edge to move with ease.
-
The engineers have designed a fully versatile cabin. Whether it is the modular container in the main console or the control in the cargo hold which automatically folds the rear seats, everything looks well thought out and in its proper place.
-
The huge glassed area, called Vista, makes for a roof practically without steel, thus allowing the front and rear passengers to gaze at the sky at all times. Interesting option.
-
There’s plenty of cabin room for five adults.
-
Handling is also up to speed, making for smooth driving.
Road-test disliked:
-
The major knock is fuel consumption. Based on our testing of all the other cross-overs on the market, we expected 13 or 14 litres per 100 km from the Edge. To our surprise, we couldn’t manage better than 16 litres, given the same distance. If you’re strictly an urban driver, well, good luck; be prepared for 19-20 litres. We’re still in shock!
-
Even though handling is little above average, the steering could use some tightening.
-
Motor music grates somewhat, especially when the rev counter nears the red line.
-
The dashboard design seems too conservative when compared to the exterior lines.
