It’s today; the 3rd of April 2006 that the Honda sub-compact named “Fit” makes its first appearance in the showrooms. When it hit the market in 2002, Fit was only available in Europe and Japan under the name “Jazz”. In that same year, it became car of the year in Japan. Nothing less. Since then, enthusiasts have clamoured for it in Canada. Well, after four years of waiting, it’s finally here.

Road stability is surprising given its height and small 14 wheels (DX and LX). Steering is precise and not especially geared down. In fact, the Fit can do tight figure eights with ease, contrary to the Korean counterparts and even the Yaris RS.
Security
Honda didn’t scrimp on security. Anti-lock brakes with electronic distribution are standard on all models. Plus, the Fit is equipped with six airbags. Honda hopes to get the frontal collision five star rating and the four star rating for side impact collisions during the NCAP tests.. The engineers at Honda showed us a collision on film between a Fit and a Ridgeline, each doing 50km/h. The Fit front end was completely crushed but the passenger area sustained minimal damage.
The Fit’s closest competitors are the Yaris and the Accent. The $ 14, 980 tag is a little high but it comes fully equipped. I believe the Fit will cut into sales of the Yaris and the Civic. |
