Hummer H3 2006

Hummer H3 2006

SUV > Hummer
By René Gervais - (2006-12-31)

When it first appeared on the roads in its Hummer H1 incantation, this controversial vehicle was only accessible to a limited clientele: those how could afford to buy and it keep it running. Not only was the price exorbitant, it also guzzled gas like a Kenworth truck. Faced with the growing popularity of the SUV, GM decided to introduce the H3, a unique vehicle at a very reasonable price.

An impressive price

The H3’s features are impressive and numerous. Above all, it’s noticed everywhere it roams, especially if it’s yellow like my test drive model. But what really impressed me was its price; I don’t often look favourably at current pricing, especially when I’m talking about a $ 40,000 sticker. Actually, the price seems reasonable given the vehicle and with its head-turning power, some will consider it a bargain. Anyway, most Hummer buyers are looking for glamour; not performance. Therefore, why not buy one without all the bells and whistles which never get used and save thousands of dollars. If you want the leather option and all the features on the H3, you’re in the $ 45,000 range. GM says the price is justified considering the Hummer line didn’t need a price slash, contrary to most other lines.

What character!

Although I mentioned the similarities between the H3 and the Colorado/Canyon, the H3 definitely has a distinctive personality. When you’re behind the wheel, the size and shape of the vehicle along with its strait windshield reminds you very quickly that this is one virile ride. As for comfort, the seats are fine, the driving position adequate and the suspension not terribly uncomfortable. It feels like you’re riding a giant ball, mainly due to the giant wheels. Even though this Hummer is the smallest of the three, it’s imposing. Given that, it handles well in the city if you’re mindful of the size. There’s a very interesting note concerning parking; it has an excellent lock, one of the best I’ve seen on any vehicle. The expression “turn on a dime” certainly applies here.

This is all well and good but will it provide serious off-road capability? Rest assured. The H3 is certainly not lacking in that area. Ground clearance is impressive, the tires are excellent and its ruggedness will handle any challenge. If, by a fluke, you get stuck, the gigantic hooks on the bumper should solve the problem even though I strongly suggest you do the pulling. After all, it’s a Hummer!
