Hyundai Santa Fe 2007

Driving impressions
On top of what’s new and interesting about this vehicle, I’d say that the handling precision really stands out. Some might see it as a flaw for a sport utility vehicle but I really enjoyed the car like handling, not to mention that many buy them for other reasons than the off-road capabilities. In the end, most will be content with the superior towing capacity as compared to a car. I also see it as an alternative to the often virility challenged minivans. All in all, the Santa Fe treats its passengers with care. Both available motors breathe new life under the hood. Frankly, things were almost perfect.
Almost…While driving on a one kilometre city stretch of road under repair, I decided to test the suspension by hitting every hole in sight. Although it held up well, the dash was in pain; it let loose with cracking sounds somewhat like dry Rice Crispies being devoured. The noise continued for the rest of the test drive. One would assume that I had added ten years to the vehicle. Needless to say, the vehicle’s sturdiness is in question. I would hate to imagine my Santa Fe after similar daily jaunts. Just a bad apple? Maybe. But I must base my conclusions on the performance of the 1000 km old test vehicle.
Different versions
Hyundai being Hyundai, the Santa Fe comes in different configurations. Although the 4 cylinder is no longer available, you still have choices; there’s the reworked V6 2.7 litres which provides better performance and especially, better fuel economy. It develops a respectable 185 horsepower. Not enough? Just call upon the 242 horsepower, 3.3 litre, V6. If that’s still not sufficient, I suggest a sport sedan or, why not a Mustang GT-500? My point is simple: given the vehicle, there’s plenty of power and the four wheel independent suspension allows edgier driving without compromising stability.
As to different versions, there’s quite a list: 2.7 GL, 3.3 GL, 3.3 Premium, 3.3 Cuir and the very distinctive 3.3 GLS. With such an array, it’s normal that there be a $10,000 spread between first and last , not to mention the attractive base price of $25, 995$. In addition, you can still choose between all-wheel-drive and two-wheel drive. |
