2009 Jaguar XF
By Benjamin Cyr
A really new vehicle
The Jaguar XF goes from expensive feline to top shape purebred. Apart from the suspension which offers both comfort and road handling, the power -driven, variable Servotronic supplies precision at high speed and aplomb in the turns.
The installed power train relies on a 4.2 litre V8 developing 300 hp and 310 pd-ft of torque at 41, 00revs/pm. This tried and tested Jaguar engine offers dependability. The six-speed transmission has mounted paddles. Generally, the performance rates well, however, when pushed, the low gear torque lacks power and speed changes could be accelerated, especially while passing; on occasion, the XF hesitates between gears. The 300 hp notwithstanding, the more than 1800 kg slows it down. Acceleration, though, holds up well with a clocking of 6.4 seconds on the way to 100 km/ph. The XF also comes in a souped-up version for those so inclined; a drill powered compressor gets this V8 into 420 hp and 408 pd-ft territory. We tried out this motor in the new XK-R last year and found the acceleration, in gear or not, breathtaking.
Much more affordable
While the former S-Type’s base price stood at $62,000 with a lacklustre V6 and going to the V8 version meant $75,000, the XF V8 basic model can be had for $59,800. Our trial vehicle happened to be the luxury version priced at $69,800. Those wishing the growling model will pay $77,000. This price compares favourably to the other luxury sedans. It’s gratifying to see freshness a in a British line formerly destined to fail. This new direction will not please the Jaguar traditionalists but, on the other hand, it should entice new converts.
Other commentary- René
Let me make this clear: I didn’t hate the XF yet I’m stuck with the vision of real Jag drivers who automatically enjoy a Montecristo and a cognac XO. Unfortunately, this XF simply made me yearn for a beer even though my colleague, for once, steals the show...
Now, will this new XF attract buyers?
Honestly, I wouldn’t bet on it. I did not like this automobile but the luxury is there in spite of the new direction. The Jaguar spirit still lives; evolution assures progress. Maybe I’m just old hat! |
