Jaguar XKR 2007

Full sport > Jaguar
By Benjamin Cyr - (2007-08-15)

As automotive journalists, we have the opportunity and the pleasure to try out new vehicles every week. We approach them the same way, whether it’s a $14,000 sub-compact or a $400,000 rocket. We “fall in love”, however, only with certain vehicles because of their comfort, luxury, performance, lines and overall balance.

Formidable feline!

The Jaguar XKR falls in that category. Some will point to the $117, 000 price tag as the main “smitten” factor but not so. We drive many high-end vehicles costing over $100,000, yet rarely does one have such an effect on us.

A remarkable body

The XK debuts in 2007 although it’s considered second generation. It weighs less and carries more advanced technology than the previous generation. For example, the body structure is made of aluminium. The amateur in you will really be taken by the XK’s superb lines. No matter the vantage point, this feline will stun you with its fluid, thoroughbred and singular lines, though not totally foreign to the exotic Aston Martin. Our version of the XRK, doubles as a high performance version of the XK, rolls on 20-inch wheels, giving it a much more aggressive and distinct look than most stock on our roads.  This is, quite simply, the prettiest ride I’ve driven in years.

An «R» version

The 300 hp, V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission performs well. Those searching for maximum power, matching sportier handling and exhilarating acceleration will (for an extra $14, 000) choose the 4.2 litre V8 developing 420 hp and 413 pound-ft. of torque. To our amazement, we managed 100 km/h under 5 seconds (4.8 to be exact), the quarter mile in 12.90 seconds, furthermore, the in gear acceleration compares favourably with the great sports cars. Directional stability never falters, even at high speeds.

Bigger brakes, bigger wheels, a refined ABS system, a firmer suspension and a roaring exhaust await the buyer of the «R» version. Let’s include a number of interior and exterior aesthetic touches as well.
