Lincoln MKX 2007
By Benjamin Cyr
A surprise from Lincoln
This rather conservative car maker has many changes in its 2007 line up, including the all new MKX. You heard right, a crossover vehicle at Lincoln! Who would of predicted such a surprise? I have to admit I find this is rather surprising. Lincoln must have more than nine lives… Could this be and actual forceful return when we were all ready to attend the funeral?
But it is actually a little late for Lincoln (Ford with the Edge) to enter the crossover market. But when looking at this new MKX, one must admit that things were not taken lightly and it is solidly built.
Its body denotes from others and its front grill has the unique new Lincoln look. Designers used a mix of retro and modern. From all angles, this car stands out from the crowd. The same observations can be made when looking at the luxurious interior the MKX. This crossover is packed with features such as an immense panoramic roof, temperature regulated front seats, an 14 speakers THX sound system, SIRIUS satellite radio, a navigation system, a superb DVD system with an 8 inch screen, and finally, the second row of seats reclines electrically.
Unique lighting
The distinctive lighting is a testimony of the modern interior design in the MKX. It offers and nice balance between art and technique. On the hatch 16 electroluminescent diodes surround the Lincoln star. The singular lighting strip that crosses from one to the other of the hatch is quite nice and gives a touch of unicity to the vehicle. The lighting theme is also found on the front the crossover since Lincoln uses an adaptive system. The headlights move in unison with the steering wheel. Thus permitting to light up the road in the best possible way and increasing the active security.
Now that you know about the technical details of the MKX, lets move on to a more important point: our impressions following the test drive.
We liked:
- The numerous distinctive elements inside. The contrast between the wood and the satin nickel elements give a nice soothing effect. Bravo Lincoln for such a display of design;
- As mentioned earlier, the MKX as high level of standard equipment;
- The modern and retro look. It may not be as trendy as both the Mazda CX-7 or the Acura RDX but it will reach a more conservative audience;
- The power unit is modern and effective. The 3.5 litres pumping out 263 horses is matched to a new six speed automatic transmission that delivers an impressive results;
- A Stability control system, anti roll and six standard air bags, the MKX has safety in mind;
- The handling has nothing in common with what our uncles are used to. Its four wheel independent suspension, 18 inch wheels and large wheelbase, the MKX handles quite well;
- Living space is within industry average and cargo space is enough to store all the luggage you need for a trip.
