Saab 9-3 2006

The cockpit
For those who did not know, Saab started out as a plane manufacturer. It also tries to remind it in all its add campaigns. The dashboard is supposed to be inspired from a jet fighter’s cockpit. But I have reserves on the final results.
First, the numbers of commands and buttons scattered across the dashboard panel is staggering. Just imagine, about 50 different buttons must be used to adjust the audio system, the climate system and information centre. On top of that, they are all lightened with a green tint at night. It is easy to understand why Saab provides a function called “night Panel” which permits to shut down all instrumentation except for the speedometer. It’s not a bad idea otherwise the distraction level would be too high.
Aside from the fact there is too many commands, the interior is actually well built using quality materials and I must admit the dashboard as a pretty unique design. Cargo space is within the industry standard but the CombiSport version offers a solution for people who are looking for a car with a large cargo space. Room in the rear seat is average but long legged passengers will find it tight. This journalist has to admit things are no better at BMW or Audi.
A different and interesting car
Saab was always different and I must say it’s still different today. But Saab changed for the better, it might not be as unique as before but the built quality has improved. Reliability was never a strong point for them but now they are becoming more reliable. Also, if you compare the 9-3 to its German competitors, it is priced lower and it offers more equipment. If it’s new look attracts you, go to the dealers and take it for a spin, you might be pleasantly surprised. |
