If there’s a manufacturer looking for a prestige image, it has to be Subaru. In the last four years, many style changes have been made to all models. A brand new grill appeared two years ago on many and, suddenly, it disappears from the 2008 stable. Perplexing! Now, let’s look at the Outback and the Legacy

2008 Subaru Legacy and Outback

Disliked:
- the $41,795 sticker for the Legacy and the $49,995 for the Outback….ouch!
- The reticence of the transmission to downshift before acceleration or quick passing;
- The acceleration times of the 2.5GT turbo version over 0-100 km are a second slower than the manual transmission version;
- The overall appearance (particularly the Outback) does not set it apart from other vehicles;
- The Outback’s occasional sluggish handling. The Legacy, on the other hand, seems to have a good balance between performance and comfort.
The Outback is an excellent compromise between a sedan and an SUV. It offers an impressive amount of cargo space and its handling and fuel consumption beat out those of big utility vehicles. A two year old competition is heating up, though, between various, ever more popular cross-over vehicles (Acura RDX, Mazda CX-7, GMC Acadia, etc.) which could mean trouble for Subaru.
As to the Legacy, the welcome 2008 sprucing up will allow this sedan to stay in the running with the best middle market vehicles. Be very careful while deciding between the various options because the price could reach prestigious European model heights. |
