Suzuki SX4 2008
By Bruno Bouchard
Road-test disliked:
- the engine’s lack of power, its noise level and growling when pushed;
- Much too high fuel consumption with the automatic transmission. We understand that all-wheel drive adds weight to the SX4 but this does not explain the averaged 11.5km in city driving. Highway mileage also disappoints: 8.1/100km;
- The distance between speeds in the automatic transmission. First goes on forever and when in third, the engine drops too low, resulting in a lack of speed;
- The trunk could be a little bigger;
- The suspension reminds one of a truck. Absorption is good but it jumps over humps.
I did not mince words above when writing about the SX4’s troubles yet it remains the best Suzuki that I’ve driven. A dynamic, well designed vehicle providing enough passengers space has a good finish, quality materials and a comfortable driving position. The JLX starts at $21,495; the multiple features installed and the all-wheel drive make for, at this price, a worthwhile acquisition. If you’re not an acceleration junky, you’ll appreciate the SX4.

I also noted the lack of power and torque. As Bruno mentioned, the automatic transmission slows things down. The power train should be better in the manual transmission version. All in all, l liked the SX4; its spacious, good-looking, well assembled, comes in a four-wheel drive version and the price is right. |
