2009 Toyota Corolla
By René Gervais
Switching to motorization, I’ll borrow the old expression:’ it’s nothing to write home about’. The 1.8 litre engine, developing 132 hp does not bring excitement. I refrain from a total pan because it features something very dear to me, stingy fuel consumption. If all the vehicles available today traded some of their power for economy, everyone but the ‘Cops’ would cheer.
I don’t want, on the other hand, to appear totally negative. Can a Toyota be a bad vehicle? Highly unlikely. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from test driving this one.’ To each his own’, if you do not share my irritation with the fuel economy, more than likely, you’ll enjoy this Japanese product. It offers plenty of interior room, adequate trunk space, and great ergonomics . The Corolla’s reliability needs no further praise and it delivers a lot for the money. The 2009 comes in four versions ranging from the CE set at $14,565, to the 158hp sports model, the XRS, which retails at $ 21, 655.
Conclusion
Given the Corolla’s impressive worldwide sales, remodelling such a success certainly weighed heavy. Creativity and exoticism notwithstanding, if sales falter, shareholders will make short shrift of our columns. This being said, I expected more’ sex appeal’, considering the major changes to the Camry yet it remains a solid car in its class.

It looks interesting, especially the one we drove, the S version. Though more ‘sporty` than the basic CE, this Corolla won’t be braking any speed records. To gain a little speed, you practically have to put your right foot through the floor and endure the high decibel level once over 4000 revs/pm. Eerie! Just like the suspension which rolls and dips the vehicle. To sum up, it seems fine for a Sunday drive through the potholes. I much prefer the Honda Civic or the Mazda 3. Yes, it gets great mileage but it’s sensation less, a serious flaw in the Corolla 2009. |
